Application Guide for the 2022 Chinese Government Scholarships “Sino-US Degree-study Scholarship”, Sun Yat-sen University

In accordance with the relevant documents stipulated by the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education and the China Scholarship Council, as well as the actual conditions of SYSU, this guide is formulated as follows.
Ⅰ. Introduction
In order to attract more outstanding American students, the “Sino-US Degree-study Scholarship” has been set up by the Ministry of Education of China. As one of the host institutions of the Chinese Government Scholarships, SYSU is entrusted to undertake the enrollment of this scholarship for bachelor's degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. programs.
Ⅱ. Eligibility
1. Applicants should be American and non-Chinese with a valid foreign passport, and meet the requirements stipulated in the Notice on the Regulations of Chinese Universities' Acceptance of International Students. Applicants should be in good health and meet the physical standards that are required for applying for a student visa or residence permit.
2. Applicants should meet the requirements of Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Undergraduate Program of International Students, Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Master Program of International Students, Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Ph.D. Program of International Students, Sun Yat-sen University.
3. Applicants for a bachelor's degree must hold a high school degree and be under (or at) the age of 25; applicants for a master's degree must hold a bachelor's degree and be under (or at) the age of 35; applicants for a doctoral degree must hold a master's degree and be under (or at) the age of 40.
Ⅲ. Scholarship Coverage and Standards
1. Tuition fee
2. On-campus accommodation fee
3. Living allowance: 2,500 RMB/month/person for bachelor's programs; 3,000 RMB/month/person for master's programs; 3,500 RMB/month/person for doctoral programs.
4. Overall Insurance and Benefit Plan
Note: If there is any change in the funding standards above, the standards released by the China Scholarship Council in 2020 shall prevail.
Ⅳ. Application Procedures
1. Online application in the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System. Applicants should visit http://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn for online application. Please choose the “Scholarship Application for Students” to log in (Type: B, Agency No. of SYSU: 10558). After submitting the completed Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship, applicants should print a hard copy with their signature on it.
2. Online application in the SYSU system. Applicants are required to visit SYSU Office of International Students' Affairs (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn) for online application. Please choose “APPLY ONLINE” accordingly and select “Self-funded”, fill in the relevant information correctly and completely, and upload the application materials (see the Table below). Application materials should be the original copies in Chinese/English. If the original copy of the following materials is written in non-Chinese/English, a notarized copy in Chinese/English is required:
(1) Valid ordinary passport (Applicants staying in China at the time of application should provide the scanned copy of passport pages with the Chinese visa or residence permit page and entry seal. If the applicant was a Chinese citizen and later acquired foreign citizenship, he/she must also provide a certificate of cancellation of household registration, a certificate of giving up Chinese citizenship, or an official document certifying that he/she has no Chinese citizenship issued by the Chinese diplomatic representation and consular authorities)
(2) Degree certificate (Fresh graduates can first provide a pre-graduation certificate from their current school. Applicants who graduated from institutions outside of the Chinese mainland must hold a bachelor's or master's degree from an institution recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education)
(3) Complete transcripts of studies (The school issued a complete report card, signature and seal.)
(4) Chinese language proficiency certificate (valid HSK certificate issued no more than two years ago or proof of Chinese language instruction in the previous degree)
(5) Two Letters of recommendation (Bachelor's degree applicant prepares respectively by the headmaster and a teacher of the applicant's high school, with their signatures, title information, and contact information of the recommenders. Graduate applicant prepares recommendation letters signed by professors or associate professors in Chinese or English.) with their signatures, title information, and contact information of the recommenders. If the recommendation letter(s) is/are sealed, applicants can send the paper version directly to the school without uploading the electronic version.
(6) Personal statement or Plan of study and research in China (Personal statement is prepared by Bachelor's degree applicant, including a self-introduction, learning experience, interests and hobbies, learning purposes, career plans after graduation, and so on. Plan of study and research in China is prepared by Graduate applicant including personal academic background and the research plan during the graduate study, Not less than 1000 words.)
(7) Physical examination and blood test results (see attachment 1 for templates. The results should be in English or Chinese, stamped with the hospital's official seal and issued no more than six months ago)
(8) Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (please consult local relevant authorities for issuing a stamped version of official and valid documents)
(9) Application form of Chinese Government Scholarship (please consult local relevant authorities http://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn for issuing a stamped version of official and valid documents.)
(10) Supporting documents (award certificates or proof of experience)
(11) Commitment letter (see attachment 2 for the template. Applicants should pledge that the application information is true, legal and valid. (Please print and sign before uploading)
(12) Guardianship guarantee and notarized certificate (Required for the applicants under 18 by September 1st, 2022. The guardian must be an adult residing in Guangdong province of China.)
(13) Personal Information Form (automatically generated by the International Student Management System and uploaded after printing and signing)
Note: Application documents must be the original ones in Chinese or English. If the documents are in other languages, the original documents and notarized Chinese or English translation of the documents must be attached. Please make sure that the applicant's email address, WeChat number and contact phone number filled in on the system are accurate. We will send a notice of supplementary documents by email (E-mails will be sent by admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn). Applicants are responsible for unsuccessful applications caused by failure to submit supplementary documents in time, notarized certificates not meeting the requirements or incorrect contact information.
Ⅴ. Majors
Please refer to the attachments of Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Programs (including Ph.D. Program, Master Program and Undergraduate Program) of International Students, Sun Yat-sen University. The specific majors will be subject to the approval by the Ministry of Education. If the applied major does not fall within the majors above, the application for this type of scholarship program will be deemed invalid.

Ⅶ. Selection Procedures
1. Qualification Approval
SYSU will comprehensively review the applicant's identification, highest degree certificate, academic transcripts, language proficiency level, letters of recommendation to decide on the assessment list.
2. Assessment
Please refer to the attachments of Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Undergraduate Program of International Students, Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Master Program of International Students, Enrollment Guidelines for the 2022 Ph.D. Program of International Students, Sun Yat-sen University.
3. Admission
Admission decisions will be based on applicants' qualification approval and assessment results, as well as their program choices. The results published by the Scholarship Management Department for the scholarship recipients' list shall prevail. Admission result will be released via Email. The Admission Letter and the Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China will be mailed to applicants between July and August according to the postal address provided by them in the application system.
4. Admitted applicants should apply for X1 visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate with the Admission Letter and the Foreign Student Visa Application Form. The X1 visa holders must go through residential formalities in the local public security departments within thirty days of entry into China. Otherwise, the admitted applicants will face expulsion. SYSU will not accept the registration of students without a valid student visa, and international students whose visas or residence permits have expired are not allowed to stay or conduct activities on campus.
Ⅷ. Others
1. Admitted students must complete registration procedures according to the registration date and location required in the Admission Letter. Those who fail to register on time or to pass the physical examination will be deprived of the scholarship.
2. In accordance with relevant regulations and requirements of the Ministry of Education, SYSU will conduct a physical examination and review of admission eligibility for all admitted applicants after enrollment. Applicants who have not met the admission requirements or provided fabricated materials will be disqualified from admissions or student status. Scholarship recipients will be disqualified.
3. Admitted students must participate in the annual review of scholarships as required. Those who fail to pass the assessment will be suspended or disqualified from the scholarship.
