2017 Confucius China Studies Program (CCSP) Ph.D. Fellowships

The Confucius China Studies Program has been established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters with the aim of fostering a deeper understanding of China and Chinese culture among young generations around the world, enabling the prosperous growth of China studies, promoting the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes, and enhancing friendly relationships between China and the people of other countries. Sun Yat-sen University is one of the 16 Chinese host universities designated by the Headquarters for the program.

Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center and the premier location for talent development in South China. SYSU is a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tier university nationally and a renowned university internationally. With five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, SYSU is striving to become a world-class university and global center of learning.

I. Content
1. Ph.D. in China Fellowship is to support international students who are interested in pursuing full-time Ph.D. degrees in the humanities and social sciences at Sun Yat-sen University. The study period is 3-4 years.  
2. Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship is to support doctoral students (candidates) registered with foreign universities to come to China for study, research, and writing doctoral dissertations. The duration of the program ranges from 6 months to 2 years.
CCSP mainly focuses on studies in humanities and social sciences. Applicants may choose their specific research topics and Chinese supervisors (lists attached) at SYSU that is designated by the Headquarters.

II. Funding
• Lodging and living stipend: 80,000 RMB per year
• Research fund: 20,000 RMB per year
• Round-trip international economy class airfare
• Tuition
• Other support provided by the host Chinese university
• Expenses for life and medical insurances in China
• Group activities and cultural experiences
• Expenses for the foreign supervisor’s visit or research in China (for Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship only)

III. Eligibility
• Non-Chinese citizens under 40 years of age.
• Applicants who are currently participating in the Chinese Government Scholarship program are not eligible to apply for this Plan.
• Chinese Proficiency:
① HSK test score level 5 or above is required for Ph.D. in China Fellowship applicants, and priority is given to applicants with higher level of proficiency in Chinese under same conditions.
② HSK test score level 3 or above is required for Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship applicants, and priority is given to applicants with higher level of proficiency in Chinese under same conditions.

3 Formal degree certificates Ph.D. in China Fellowship:One copy of notarized transcripts of undergraduate and graduate studies, diplomas, and their Chinese versions respectively

4 Recommendation letters Two recommendation letters from relevant experts; Priority is given to applicants who obtain a recommendation letter from Confucius Institutes.
5 Abstract of master’s thesis and other academic publications/ Abstract of doctoral dissertation  
6 HSK transcript HSK test score level 5 or above is required for Ph.D. in China Fellowship applicants
HSK test score level 3 or above is required for Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship

V. How to apply
Step 1: Online application.
① Log on http://ccsp.chinese.cn and fill in the CCSP Application Form and upload the required documents. Sun Yat-sen University should be chosen as the host university.
② Log on http://application.sysu.edu.cn and fill in SYSU Application Form, and choose “Confucius China Studies Program”.
Step 2: Mail the hard copies of application documents.
Applicants are required to send all the application documents to the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Sun Yat-sen University respectively. (Note: Please write 2017 CCSP Application documents on the envelope.)

VI. Application Deadline
February 15, 2017
The CCSP online application system will be closed on February 15th, 2017, at 23:59 (Beijing time). All the application documents should be mailed before the deadline.

VII. Selection and Notification
The applicants’ qualifications will be examined by Sun Yat-sen University. Documents of shortlisted candidates will be forwarded to CCSP Expert Committee for appraisal and video interview. Admission Letter will be mailed by SYSU to the Fellowship recipients. They will start their programs in the autumn of 2017.
