Legal Residence

Every foreigner residing in China must have a valid passport, with visa or residence permit. Those with expired passport, visa or residence permit, and those using forged documents, etc., will be considered illegal residents. According to the circumstances, illegal residents may be given a warning, a fine or a detention review until they are repatriated. Therefore, every overseas student must pay attention to their passports and visas, to ensure that no passport, visa or residence permit expires.

Foreigners living in China must go to the local police station timely for accommodation registration procedures. Accommodation registration must be handled within 24 hours after check in, handled at local police station or authorized department with accommodation registration form receiving, accompanied with landlord and passport. Registration could be done by reception center in foreign hotel and international student apartment. After accommodation registration, accommodation registration form and passport shall be safekeeping for carrying out.

Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau, Immigration Office, management detachment is in charged of foreign immigration affairs in Guangzhou, with similar responsibilities as other countries’ immigration offices. Here is the information:

Punishment to illegal acts

Foreigners or persons liable will be punished in accordance with illegal residence, illegal stay or other illegal acts by the public security organizations.

International students holding study visa X1 must apply for residence permit within 30 days after entry, otherwise will be considered as illegal residents responsible for any duties or fines. Documents needed for residence permit application:

Personal valid passport

“Health Certificate” issued by Guangdong International Travel Health Care Center

“Visa Letter of Sun Yat-sen University ”issued by International Students Office

Sun Yat-sen University “Letter of admission” and “Visa Application Form of Foreign Students to China ”(JW201 or JW202 form)

Guangdong province foreigner visa digital photo collection receipt and one front bareheaded photo (blue background)

Valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form”in Guangzhou

International students must take above documents to International Students Office of Educational Administration Department, Sun Yat-sen University for application, and submit e-application, then wait for review by immigration office of Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau.

After receiving visa application number, international students personally go to the management detachment, Immigration Office, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau to proceed. Here is the contact:

International students carrying passport personally re-apply for valid “Foreigners accommodation registration form”in Guangzhou within 24 hours after receiving residence permit in the residential police station.
Within the period of residence, international students holding residence permit can exit (to Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan) and re-enter China without extra visas.
Residence Permit Extension Application
For residence period extension for further study, international students holding residence permit should apply at least 30 days (5 to 6 weeks in advance are better) prior to the expiry of the residence period. Documents needed below:
Personal valid passport
“Visa Letter of Sun Yat-sen University ”issued by International Students Office
One Guangdong province foreigner visa digital photo and corresponding “check receipt”
Valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form”in Guangzhou
International students holding above documents apply for permit extension at the International Students Office of Educational Administration Department, Sun Yat-sen University, submit e-application, and wait for review by immigration office of Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau. After receiving visa application number, international students personally go to the management detachment, Immigration Office, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau to proceed. Within 24 hours after getting residence permit extension, international students must personally re-apply for valid “foreigners accommodation registration form”in Guangzhou at residential police station.
Visa Extension Application
International students with study visa X2 applying for visa stay extension for further study, must apply at least 7 days (2 to 3 weeks are better) prior to the expiry of visa stay period. Documents needed:
Personal valid passport
“Visa Letter of Sun Yat-sen University ”issued by International Students Office
Sun Yat-sen University “Letter of admission” and “Visa Application Form of Foreign Students to China ”(JW201 or JW202 form)
One Guangdong province foreigner visa digital photo and corresponding “check receipt”
Valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form”in Guangzhou
International students holding above documents apply for permit extension at the International Students Office of Educational Administration Department, Sun Yat-sen University, submit e-application, and wait for review by immigration office of Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau. Within 24 hours after getting visa extension, international students should personally take passport to hostel, apartment or residence’s corresponding police station to re-apply for the valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form”in Guangzhou.
Note: according to the regulations of , visa extension is valid only for this stay, without influencing the times of entry and entry validity, and accumulative extension period must be shorter than original visa stay period.v Passport Loss and Re-application
If your passport is found missing, please follow below steps to proceed:
Immediately report to the corresponding police station and get the report reference and receipt. Take above documents to the management detachment, Immigration Office, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau to report your loss of passport, get the “Passport Loss Reference” and go on the residence permit loss declaration procedures.
Go to your national embassy in PRC to apply for a new passport with your “Passport Loss Reference”. Within 24 hours after receiving new passport, take your new passport and “Passport Loss Reference” to re-apply for valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form” in Guangzhou, and apply for a new visa or residence document in international students administration office within 10 days. Within 24 hours after getting new visa or residence document, take your passport personally to residential police station to renew your valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form” in Guangzhou.
Passport re-application done in China without new residence permit application within 10 days, will be considered as illegal stay.
Passport Renewal
Due to the expiration of the passport or other reasons for passport renewal in China, international students should apply 2 months prior to the expiry of holding residence permit. After passport renewal, you should renew the residence permit within 10 days.
Due to the expiration of the passport or other reasons for passport renewal in original country, entering China with new passport and valid residence permit of old passport, you should renew the residence permit within 10 days.
Documents needed for residence permit renewal:

Within 24 hours after residence permit renewal, international students should re-apply for valid “Foreigners Accommodation Registration Form” of Guangzhou personally with passport in international dormitory, hostel or residential police station.
It will be considered as illegal stay changing residing address that you renew your passport in China without applying for new residence permit within 10 days.
If you move into a new place, please at first, go to the local police office for accommodation registration. And then, take your new temporary accommodation registration form to International Students Office to apply for the change of residence address on visa within 10 days.
Other Considerations
The valid period of International students’visa and residence permit applying in China should not be longer than study period.
Before you study in our school, if you have visa or residence permit applying via other school in China, you must get the study completed certificate or transfer certificate of previous school. When study finish, you must exit China before the expired date of your visa or residence permit, otherwise you will be considered as illegal stay.
Freshman holding expired or closely expired visa or residence permit, won’t be accepted to register. They must go to the management detachment, Immigration Office, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau personally for punishment.
There might be changes of visa policy according to national laws and regulations, and our school subjects to the formal notes of the management detachment, Immigration Office, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau to execute each visa policy.
