Outstanding International Student Scholarship Supported by the Guangdong Provincial Government at Sun Yat-sen University for the academic year 2017/2018

In line with the notice set by the Guangdong Province Office of Education in circular No.【2015】155, the government authorities in Guangdong Province have established the “academic year 2014/2015 Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship”. 79 is the number of the scholarship quotas at Sun Yat-sen University, among which, 10 should go to PhDs, 24 to Masters and 45 to Undergraduates. 

We welcome applications from the qualified applicants. The details for this program are as follows. 

II.Application Requirements

2.1. Applicants should have a foreign citizenship, a valid passport and meet the relevant requirements of international students in China, aged under 40 years old.

2.2. Applicants should have taken more than one-year’s degree study (including one year) at Sun Yat-sen University.

2.3. Applicants should be friendly to China, healthy, law-abiding, studious, honest, and have no records of breaking Chinese laws, regulations as well as university and school rules.

2.4. Applicants should have excellent academic performances in the academic year 2014/2015, be good in compulsory courses (at least 70 points or above according to the 100 points evaluation system) and fail in no courses.

2.5. International students who have already taken or are enjoining the Chinese Government Scholarship (including Excellent Self-funded International Student supported by the Chinese government Scholarship) and other kinds of scholarship (excluding such encouraging prizes as Perfect Attendance Prize, Excellent Students Prize, etc.) are no longer entitled to apply for this scholarship.

2.6. International students who have registered during the designated period set by the university for the two semesters of academic year 2014/2015.

III.Application Materials

3.1. Application Form for Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship can be downloaded via   http://iso.sysu.edu.cn/en/downloads (Page1-3 must be filled out by the applicants and in accordance with Item 13 on Page 2, a complete transcript with the official stamp from the Dean’ Office or the Graduate School should be provided. Page 4-5 which shall be filled out by the school authorities. They are mainly the major courses taken by the applicants and the evaluations, comments, opinions or recommendations from their mentors or teachers as well as the schools.

3.2. A copy of passport and valid visa.

IV.Application Deadline

All application materials should be submitted to corresponding schools before August, 20, 2015.

V. Approval Procedures

5.1. The university authorities have set up a scholarship evaluation committee consisting of the units such as Office for International Students’ Affair, Graduate School, Dean’s Office and Dean’s Office of Medical Education. The application evaluations should made by this committee. The list of qualified candidates will be submitted to the Guangdong Province Office of Education.

5.2. The final list is subject to the announcement by the Guangdong Province Office of Education after their public displays.

VI. Management and Supervision

6.1. All materials given by schools, mentors or teachers are true and correct. Otherwise, the school may be temporarily disqualified from the recommendation.

6.2. Candidates are selected via a fair, impartial and standard process.

6.3. Schools should strengthen management over scholarship students, who must be reported for breach of “Regulations on Cultivations for Foreign Graduate Students in Sun Yat-sen University” and other rules of the university to Office for International Students’ Affairs and Graduate School. Where there is a gross breach, scholarship is to be canceled.

6.4. If violating any laws or regulations of the People’s Republic of China, the scholarship student will be stripped from this scholarship and the eligibility to apply for scholarships in the future.

Application Guidelines for the 2017 Chinese Government Scholarship-Chinese University Postgraduate Program, Sun Yat-sen University

I. Introduction  

The “Chinese Government Scholarship –Chinese University Postgraduate Program”, a full scholarship set up by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE) in 2008, is aimed at promoting Chinese higher education brand on an international basis. Enrolment is managed directly by China’s key universities. As a key comprehensive university, Sun Yat-sen University undertakes the enrolment of international postgraduates under this government scholarship. 

II.  Eligibility 

1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health. 

2. Education background and age limit:

① Applicants for master's degree studies should have obtained a bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35. 

② Applicants for doctoral degree studies should have obtained a master's degree and be under the age of 40.

3. Applicants should not be a registered student in Chinese universities at the time of application (except for those who graduated from Chinese university for one year or longer.)

4. The applicant must have good scientific research ability and good knowledge of specialized courses. 

5. Most of master's and doctoral programs at SYSU are taught in Chinese. In principle, the applicants should have a relevant command of Chinese proficiency.

① Those who take the courses of sciences and technology or medical sciences in Chinese should have the certificate of HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 3 or above(or New HSK Level 4, over 180 points);

② Those who intend to major in liberal arts (major for Chinese language exclusive), economics, managerial science and international trade should have the certificate of HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 6 or above (or New HSK Level 5, over 180 points).

③ For those whose Chinese proficiency level have not met the requirements and wish to take Chinese-taught courses before major studies commence, they are expected to have obtained the new HSK Level 4 for programs in the humanities, economics, management, law, arts, or Level 3 for programs in sciences, engineering and medicine. Only by passing the required new HSK test within the year could they start their major studies.

6.  The applicant must be in good behavior with no bad hobbies.

Note: This scholarship is not available to students majoring in one’s native languages or in a third-country language such as English or French etc.

Ⅲ. Scholarship details

1. Tuition: Waive.

2. Accommodation:  Free on-campus accommodation (The successful candidates can only be arranged a bed in the Double Room ).

3. Living allowance: RMB3,000/month/person for a master candidate; RMB3,500 /month/person for a doctoral candidate

4. Comprehensive medical insurance

5. International Round-trip Travel Expenses: born by the candidates themselves.

Step 1: Complete the online scholarship application

Visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or http://www.campuschina.org (click “Application Online” to log in)to complete application (Agency No. of Sun Yat-sen University at CSC: 10558), download and print out the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship and then sign the form.

Step 2: SYSU entrance application

Applicants are required to make another online application on http://application.sysu.edu.cn, and then download and print out the SYSU Application Form for International Students. When fill in the application form, choose “Chinese Government Scholarship-Chinese University Program”.

Step 3: Post the hard copies of application documents

Applicants are required to send all the required documents to Sun Yat-Sen University by post or in person before March 20, 2017. V.  Application documents (Hardcopies in duplicate)

If applicants have published papers, the abstracts should be enclosed during submission of their application documents.


① Applicants are expected to submit a complete set of application materials. Incomplete application materials will be rejected. No matter whether the candidates are accepted or not, all the application materials will not be returned.

②Applicants are expected to keep their phones open and check their email regularly as SYSU Admissions Office will contact them when necessary.

Sun Yat-sen University “2017 Undergraduate Scholarship Programme for International Students from Southeast Asian Countries”

SunYat-sen University (SYSU) is an important base for conducting scientific research, inheriting cultural and academic traditions and training high-level talents in South China. Being one of the leading universities in China and the world, SYSU is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university. The University enjoys a deep tradition of international cooperation and exchange in education with universities abroad. To improve its educational influence in the region in an overall way and to attract more students from all over the world, SYSU has setup the “Undergraduate Scholarship for International Students”, in support of outstanding students’ pursuit of bachelor's degrees at SYSU.

1. Entrance Requirements:

(1) Applicants shall be non-Chinese with Southeast Asian citizens, hold a valid foreign passport, and meet relevant requirements for international students in China;

(2) Be healthy, friendly towards China, law-abiding, studious and well-conducted, without any records of violation of Chinese laws, regulations or school rules.

(3) Applicants shall be graduates from high school, with their high school grades ranking among the top; otherwise, applicants shall display excellence in social services, sports, music, other cultural activities or leadership.

(4) Language Proficiency:

文科/Liberal Arts, Economics and Managerial Science Majors: HSK 5 Certificate (with 180 points or above) or other equivalent Chinese Learning Certificate;

理工/Science, Engineering and Medical Science Majors: HSK 4 Certificate (with 180 points or above) or other equivalent Chinese Learning Certificate.

The scholarship recipients without adequate Chinese language proficiency must take Chinese preparatory course for one academic year. Upon the completion of the preparatory course and the satisfaction of the language entry requirements, he or she will enter the undergraduate programme.

(5) Applicants are required to obtain a recommendation letter issued by recommendation institutions* (refer to Appendix for details).

4. Application Procedure

(1) Applicants shall submit the application materials to the recommendation institutions, with the specific documents and requirements as follow:

The qualified applicants will receive a recommendation letter issued by recommendation institutions.

(2) Applicants shall submit the application documents to SYSU; the specific application procedures are as follow:

A. Online Application

Applicants shall log on http://application.sysu.edu.cn with their own accounts, select “SYSU scholarship” program, fill in the form and upload the scanned copies of Passport’s Personal Information Page, the notarized Diploma and Transcripts for Senior High School, Language Proficiency Certificate, Award Certificates or Experience Certificates, Personal Statement and Recommendation Letter.

B. Please Note:

a. After submitting the Application Form online, applicants do not need to post the paper application documents to SYSU.

b. The uploaded scanned images of documents must be clear and readable. If the documents do not meet the requirements, SYSU will not accept his or her application.

5. Scholarship Coverage:

(1) Liberal Arts, Economics and Managerial Science Majors: RMB56,000yuan/person/academic year (including tuition fee RMB26,000yuan/person/academic year and living allowance RMB 30,000yuan/person/academic year)

(2) Science and Engineering Majors: RMB63,800yuan/person/academic year (including tuition fee RMB33,800yuan/person/academic year and living allowance RMB 30,000yuan/person/academic year)

(3) Medical Science Majors: RMB78,000yuan/person/academic year (including tuition fee RMB48,000yuan/person/academic year and living allowance RMB 30,000yuan/person/academic year)

The living allowance will be granted to the recipient via his or her bank account in one lump sum after registration. Tuition fee will be waived, but the scholarship recipients are required to pay fees in accordance with the standard of the self-supported students (including accommodation, insurance and other expenses). The recipients shall be also responsible for the visa application and the round-trip air ticket.

6. Scholarship Granting Period:

(1) The scholarship principally covers the normal study period of the undergraduate programme.

(2) The scholarship recipients without adequate Chinese language proficiency must take Chinese preparatory course for one academic year.The scholarship will cover both major study and one academic year of Chinese Language study.

(3) A scholarship review will be carried out by the university annually to assess the recipients’ academic and overall performance. Recipients who pass the review will continue to receive the scholarship funding.

7. Selection Procedure:

(1) During the application time, SYSU and recommendation institutions will guide the applicants to submit the application documents to the recommendation institutions. The recommendation institutions will screen excellent applicants and provide Recommendation Letter.

(2) By the application deadlines, the recommendation institutions will send the Name List of the recommended applicants to wuhao36@mail.sysu.edu.cn and yangwq6@mail.sysu.edu.cn.

(3) Two weeks after the application deadline, SYSU will organize a panel of experts to review the application materials and, if necessary, conduct long-distance or face-to-face interviews with the applicants in order that the overall qualities of the applicants can be assessed.

(4) The Acceptance List will be released before May 30.
